Repairs and safety

Golf carts use high-current electrical systems (commonly 36V or 48V battery packs) and, in gas models, fuel and moving engine parts. Working on them can cause burns, electric shock, battery explosions, fires, chemical injuries from battery acid, or a cart that moves unexpectedly.

  • Follow your vehicle manufacturer's manual and warnings. If a guide conflicts with your manual, follow the manual.
  • Wear eye protection and gloves around batteries, remove jewelry, use insulated tools, keep sparks and flames away, and work in a ventilated area.
  • Put the cart in a safe state before testing: on level ground, with the wheels blocked or drive wheels lifted securely, and the Tow/Run switch set as your manual directs.
  • If you're not comfortable with a step, stop and use a qualified technician or authorized dealer.

You are responsible for your own safety and for any work you do. Golf Cart Clinic is not liable for injury, damage or loss resulting from the use of information on this site.

Legal information

Our street-legal guides summarize state laws and link to the official sources, but they are not legal advice. Laws change, and counties, cities, homeowners' associations and communities can set additional or stricter rules. Before driving a golf cart or low-speed vehicle on public roads, confirm the current rules with your state agency and local government.

Warranty

Repairs, modifications or non-original parts may affect your manufacturer's warranty. Check your warranty terms before working on a cart that's still covered.

Accuracy

We work hard to keep information accurate and cite our sources, but we can't guarantee every detail is complete or current for your specific vehicle. Model differences, running production changes and aftermarket modifications are common.
